Certified Safety Specialist (CSS)


Certified Safety Specialist (CSS) certification purpose is to promote excellence and professionalism in the occupational health and safety (OHS) field. CSS certification authenticates that certified individuals have met minimum formal education, competency and experience requirements.

The criteria for designation as a Certified Safety Specialist (CSS) are extremely high. Applicants must have a degree and at least three years of professional safety experience.

Certified Safety Specialist (CSS) Blue Print
CSS Blue Print contains four (9) domains

  • Law and ethics – 8%
  • Ergonomics and hygiene – 10%
  • Safety fundamentals – 22%
  • Management systems – 20%
  • Fire and emergency management – 9%
  • Risk management – 9%
  • Communication & training – 8%
  • Audit and inspection – 7%
  • Environmental management system – 7%
Applicants for CSS certification must meet one of the following two options:

Option 1: Accredited master / bachelor degree in any subject and at least three years of professional safety experience in any industry where safety is atleast 50%, preventative, professional level with breadth and depth of health and safety duties.

Option 2: Associate diploma in HSE or closely related field and at least four years of professional safety experience in any industry where safety is atleast 50%, preventative, professional level with breadth and depth of health and safety duties.

Examination Method & Format:
The examination consist of 180-200 multiple choice questions by computer delivered examination and 5 hours to complete the examination. The examination will be in two formats case based or independent questions.
